Speaker Mike Johnson just passed a "clean" government funding bill with mostly Democratic votes. But no one's eager to go through another speaker fight, and the hard right's cutting him some slack. If so, that's because it's essentially the same thing that triggered the end of Kevin McCarthy's speakership in October. But that hasn't been enough to mollify critics on the hard right, including one who described it as "[perpetuating] the very system my constituents sent me here to oppose." And hard right Republicans are at least somewhat optimistic that they can keep that process going, despite the passage of a temporary government funding bill that they philosophically disagree with.

McCarthy told Fox News on Saturday that there is nothing the House can do until the body elects a speaker: "I don't know if that happens quickly," McCarthy said. House Republicans are expected to vote for a candidate to replace McCarthy on Wednesday morning. The Florida Republican said House Republicans will coalesce around Scalise or Jordan this week: "I reject the premise that this is going to drag on for weeks," Gaetz said.

Matt Gaetz was one of the last holdouts in backing challengers to Kevin McCarthy's speakership bid. Gaetz told CNN that he "ran out of things" to ask for by the end of the public leadership fight. However, by the 14th ballot — when the vast majority of the conservative holdouts had finally moved behind McCarthy — Gaetz shifted his vote from Jordan and instead recorded himself as "present." Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama after the 14th round of voting then confronted Gaetz and appeared to lunge at the Floridian over the vote.
